HAYLEY HEARD A MAN speaking very loudly, practically shouting inside the building when she stepped off the elevator where Henry said Noah worked these days. She tiptoed down the hall and peeked around the corner then stopped. Inside a small room walled by windows, stood Noah and a tall thin man, seemingly in heated dispute. The other band members lurked in the background, watching.

She stayed hidden, however couldn’t help but eavesdrop while secretly watching.

The man, who she assumed was the producer, sounded enraged. His twangy voice grated her nerves right away as he bellowed, “My phone’s been ringing nonstop. We’ve got girls complaining that you used something to burn them the night outside the restaurant.”

“They’re bloody well insane!” Noah snapped. “I was down on the ground fighting for air. If not for Hayley, they’d have left me naked.”

The man spun around and let out a growl of disgust. “Ah yes, Hayley Finnigan. Why the hell do I keep hearing her name?”

“I had one date with her. Why don’t you ask Ty?”

Hayley clapped a hand over her mouth to conceal a gasp. Why did Noah mention Ty? She wondered what kind of vicious lies Ty had spread.

“Look, Noah. I thought you and I reached an understanding about this girl.”

“I don’t recall agreeing to anything regarding Hayley. And I don’t appreciate you trashing her. And I really don’t like that you interfered with my personal life. Seems to me that you and the guys are in on this together,” Noah shot back.

“Your bandmates know what it takes to rise to the top. They’re only looking out for you by keeping me informed.” The man sounded anything but sincere.

Hayley scowled but stayed out of sight.

“I don’t need a babysitter,” Noah stated. “Ty isn’t looking out for me. He’s jacked off because Hayley shot him down.”

“Get rid of her. She’s gonna ruin your career. She’s a freaky little thing and she’ll scare your fans away. The last thing I need is some temperamental lunatic attacking girls who flock to see you. This is rock and roll, mate. Ditch the bitch.”

“I don’t have to.” Noah sighed loud enough that Hayley heard him. “She dumped me last night. Happy now?”

“Yeah. You’re better off. Now maybe I can clean up the damage done by rumors of your tattoo burning the girls.”

“Hey,” Noah sharply retorted. “You made that mess, not me. I’d never hurt a woman, let alone burn fans even if they were attacking me.”

“Well, they weren’t all too happy about Hayley jumping in and beating them away. A little over dramatic, don’t ya think?”

“You wouldn’t understand her. She’s different...in a good way.”

“Shit,” the man grumbled. “You’ve got that love-struck look in your eyes. I told you in the beginning, no girlfriends while you’re on the way up. Chicks don’t wanna see their heartthrob on the arm of some possessive wench, shooting dagger-eyed looks at the competition. You’re still a nobody. When you have a dozen CDs released and sellout tours, then you can think about a relationship.
